From the outside, Facebook is a place to reconnect with long lost friends, catch up on the latest gossip, and share funny things found around the web. But, there is a very important part of Facebook many seem to forget: the Apps.
Those annoying requests you always get from a long lost friend, the constant updates you see on your feeds, that’s the cloud working. Facebook works as a PaaS platform for developers of all shapes and sizes to design and implement their applications on. With the hype around Facebook, and the new ability to make money through Facebook Apps, it has spawned its own industry.
While Farmville might just be a fun game to play with the kids, it’s actually doing a lot more: “The Facebook App industry has contributed more than 15 billion dollars in wages and benefits to the US economy alone.” To put it into perspective, over 20 million applications are installed per day, think of how big your farm could grow with some of those neighbors!
